August 2000 marked my second year at Burning Man. My first trip was such a phenomenal experience that I had been looking forward to this trip for the previous 11.5 months. I wasn't disappointed, but it was very interesting experiencing it from a new viewpoint.
Last year I wasn't quite sure what to expect. Friends had tried to describe Burning Man to me, but descriptions just don't do it justice. So once I arrived, I ran around like crazy trying to experience as much as possible and take it all in. This year, since I knew what I was getting into, I was able to just live it, to bask in it, and direct my energy towards spending time with and getting to know the people in our camp.
Burning Man is a wonderful opportunity to get to know people - you don't have work and other real-life annoyances in the way, and because of the primitive nature of your living situation, it allows you to better see people for what they are. Where at home you probably only see your friends when they're in a good mood, and after they've showered and put on a nice outfit; well, at BM you see your friends no matter what mood they're in, and when they're wearing filthy clothes and haven't showered for days. You're seeing the real person. It's cool. (And believe it or not, the not showering bit really isn't as bad as you might think!)
Our theme this year was "Fish Camp". We were located at 7:30 & Gut Alley (and I have the street sign at home to prove it!) Participants included me, Susan, Ashley, Amber, Bernd, Marya, (Evil) Tim, (New) Tim, Raphael, Stacy, Jordy, Laura, Jonathan, Brady, Cathy, Kate, Judi, Sara, Josh, Ray, Mike, Maggie, (Good) Tim, Stephany, Glen, Max, Kimi, and a few others whom I unfortunately do not remember. We again had our 18-foot-tall pyramid (for awhile at least), and we decorated the inside of the pyramid and the camp itself with all sort of fish and sea creatures, an 8-foot sea-themed obilisk, streamers, and a school of large, inflatable sharks, dolphins & killer whales. At night the obilisk was illuminated, and the pyramid sparkled with christmas lights, disco balls, flashing lights and a dancing laser.
We had a pretty cool camp, for awhile at least...
